About the Client
Our client is a Chartered Accounting and Advisory firm based in New Zealand, growing their existing offshore team to support their accounting function. They provide personalized accounting, taxation, and business advisory services to small and medium-sized businesses, helping clients make informed financial decisions through timely reporting and proactive advice. This role exists to deliver accurate compliance work while contributing meaningful business insights that help clients achieve their financial goals.
The Role
As an Intermediate Accountant, you'll manage a portfolio of clients, delivering high-quality accounting, taxation, and advisory services while building trusted client relationships. You'll prepare financial reports, provide proactive business advice, and collaborate closely with senior accountants to support continuous improvement across the practice. Success in this role comes from combining technical accounting expertise with strong communication skills and a genuine commitment to delivering value to clients.
What You'll Do
Compliance
Attend to peer Review of annual accounting work
Preparation of Annual accounts and Tax returns for selected clients with your portfolio as per allowed budget
Provide coaching and professional development advice to less experienced team members, where appropriate
Advise clients in regards to tax efficiency and structuring
Look after client queries and ensure proactive client communication
Business Advice and Management
Preparation of management accounts, forecasts and budgets and cashflows
Provide tangible value-add business advice to clients through accurate reporting and through understanding the specific requirements of individual clients
Complete non-compliance value added work
Look for value added project work within the portfolio of clients allocated
Execute effective face to face client meetings
Internal
Proactively assist Senior Accountant with the improvement of operational processes relating to compliance work
Assist Senior Accountant with development plans for less experience staff in the accounting team
Ensure company core values are upheld and help build a winning and fun business culture
Miscellaneous
Other duties reasonably within the capability of the employee may also be required from time to time. The employee’s duties may be altered following consultation with the employee
What We're Looking For
Previous experience in a public practice accounting firm
Strong knowledge of New Zealand accounting and tax compliance
Experience preparing financial statements and income tax returns
Experience preparing management reports, budgets, and cash flow forecasts
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with excellent attention to detail
Ability to manage multiple client engagements and meet deadlines
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Strong client relationship management and stakeholder engagement skills
Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within a team
Nice to Have
Experience providing business advisory services to SME clients
Experience mentoring or coaching junior accountants
Exposure to tax planning, business structuring, and value-added consulting
Experience with cloud accounting platforms such as Xero and related accounting software
