About The Back Room
We exist to free our clients' time so they can focus on what they do best — growing their business. We deliver smart, efficient solutions that liberate teams from the everyday admin, and we hold ourselves to the same standard. Time is the ultimate currency, and we treat it like it.
About the Client
Our client is a Chartered Accounting and advisory practice based on Auckland's North Shore, looking to build their offshore team to support the delivery of bookkeeping and compliance services across a portfolio of clients.
This role exists to maintain accurate and up-to-date client financial records, prepare New Zealand GST returns, complete reconciliations, and provide reliable bookkeeping support that enables the accounting team to deliver compliance and advisory work efficiently.
The Role
As a Bookkeeper, you'll manage bookkeeping activities across an assigned portfolio of clients, primarily using Xero and other cashbooks. You'll be responsible for transaction processing, reconciliations, GST preparation, ledger reviews, and supporting annual accounts work while following established procedures and quality standards.
Success in this role means keeping client records accurate and current, identifying issues before they become problems, meeting recurring deadlines, and producing work that requires minimal correction or follow-up.
What You'll Do
Process transactions and maintain bookkeeping records for an assigned portfolio of clients using Xero and other cashbooks.
Complete bank, credit card, loan, and other balance sheet reconciliations.
Maintain accurate transaction coding and ledger records.
Review client ledgers for coding errors, duplicated or missing transactions, inconsistencies, and unusual items.
Use AI-assisted ledger review tools and established checklists to identify items requiring investigation or correction.
Prepare New Zealand GST returns and supporting working papers for review and filing within required deadlines.
Maintain and reconcile balance sheet items, including fixed assets, suspense and clearing accounts, and other relevant accounts.
Obtain or request missing information needed to complete bookkeeping and GST work.
Maintain organised electronic client files and supporting documentation.
Assist with annual accounts preparation through reconciliations, workpapers, and supporting schedules.
Complete assigned work in line with firm procedures, quality standards, and agreed deadlines.
What We're Looking For
At least 2 years of practical bookkeeping experience.
Strong working knowledge of Xero, including transaction processing and reconciliations.
Experience preparing GST returns. New Zealand GST experience is preferred, though candidates without it should be able to learn and apply documented NZ GST procedures.
Strong ability to complete bank and balance sheet reconciliations and investigate discrepancies.
Ability to identify coding errors, missing information, and unusual ledger entries.
High level of accuracy and attention to detail.
Experience processing payroll.
Ability to follow documented procedures, checklists, and review requirements.
Ability to manage multiple client files and recurring deadlines.
Clear written and spoken English.
Comfortable using technology-assisted review tools while applying sound judgement and verifying outputs.
Reliable internet connection and a suitable remote working environment.
Nice to Have
Experience working with New Zealand businesses or a New Zealand Chartered Accounting practice.
Experience preparing year-end workpapers and schedules for annual accounts.
Experience with FYI, Hubdoc, or similar accounting practice systems.
A bookkeeping or accounting qualification.
Experience reviewing and correcting transaction coding completed by clients or other bookkeepers.
Familiarity with MYOB, Prosaic, Microsoft 365, Teams, Excel, CoPilot, or similar accounting and document-management tools.
Why This Role
This is an opportunity to work closely with a New Zealand Chartered Accounting practice and support a varied portfolio of clients across bookkeeping and compliance activities. You'll gain exposure to NZ bookkeeping workflows, GST, reconciliations, annual accounts support, and technology-assisted quality-control processes, with a defined pathway from Bookkeeper to Senior Bookkeeper and potentially Junior Accountant based on demonstrated capability and business requirements.
