About The Back Room
We exist to free our clients' time so they can focus on what they do best — growing their business. We deliver smart, efficient solutions that liberate teams from the everyday admin, and we hold ourselves to the same standard. Time is the ultimate currency, and we treat it like it.
About the Client
Our client is a public accounting and advisory firm based in California, USA, that is growing its offshore team to support audit, tax, accounting, and advisory functions. This role exists to help deliver high-quality client service by supporting financial reporting, compliance, and business advisory engagements across a diverse portfolio of privately held businesses, nonprofits, and high-net-worth individuals.
The Role
We are seeking a tax professional with practical AI and business analysis experience to help develop and improve tax workflows. This role bridges tax practitioners and technology teams, translating business needs into reliable prompts, agents, and automations that reduce manual work and improve accuracy.
This person will also help the tax department use existing, firm-approved AI tools effectively—identifying useful applications, establishing repeatable practices, and coaching staff on incorporating AI into their daily work.
The ideal candidate understands tax workpapers and preparation processes, asks thoughtful questions, and can turn an ambiguous request into a clearly defined solution. The position combines hands-on experimentation, requirements gathering, testing, implementation, and staff enablement.
What You'll Do
Business Analysis & Process Improvement
Work with U.S. tax professionals to identify repetitive tasks, understand pain points, and prioritize automation opportunities.
Translate loosely defined requests into documented workflows, business requirements, data inputs, expected outputs, and acceptance criteria.
Map tax documents and workpaper requirements to structured data and application workflows.
Evaluate potential projects based on time savings, accuracy, implementation effort, and ongoing support needs.
Effective Use of Existing AI Tools
Help tax professionals apply existing, firm-approved AI tools to research, document review, data analysis, drafting, and other appropriate tasks.
Identify underused capabilities in the department’s current software and demonstrate practical applications.
Develop reusable prompts, templates, and examples tailored to tax department needs.
Provide demonstrations, hands-on coaching, and troubleshooting to build staff confidence and proficiency.
Teach staff how to frame requests, supply relevant context, verify results, and recognize when professional judgment or further review is required.
Gather user feedback and share effective practices across the department.
AI & Automation Development
Build, test, and refine prompts and AI agents using examples, clear instructions, and appropriate guardrails.
Develop workflows for document intake, tax data extraction, prior-year comparisons, missing-document identification, and reconciliation.
Generate structured outputs, such as JSON and Excel tables, for use in workpapers and applications.
Support automation of tax research and calculation workflows, with source traceability and review by qualified tax professionals.
Collaborate with developers to implement calculation logic, integrate systems, and troubleshoot issues.
Evaluate models and tools based on output quality, consistency, speed, and cost.
Quality, Documentation & Adoption
Test solutions against representative tax scenarios, document errors and exceptions, and establish appropriate human review.
Maintain version history, change logs, and rollback procedures for prompts, agents, and related code.
Create practical procedures, user guidance, and training materials.
Support pilots, releases, and ongoing improvements in collaboration with U.S. and offshore teams.
Track results, including time saved, reduced rework, output reliability, and adoption.
Protect confidential client information and follow firm policies for approved AI tools and data handling.
What We're Looking For
Practical experience in tax preparation, tax research, or tax technology, with a working understanding of U.S. individual income tax processes and workpapers.
Hands-on experience building AI-assisted workflows or automations beyond routine chatbot use.
Strong prompt development skills, including iterative testing, use of examples, and investigation of inconsistent outputs.
Ability to translate business needs into clear requirements and structured workflows.
Ability to explain AI capabilities and limitations in plain language and coach tax professionals with varying levels of technical experience.
Strong Excel and data reconciliation skills, with familiarity extracting information from PDFs and other tax documents.
Ability to work with developers and understand structured data formats such as JSON.
Strong written and verbal English, sound judgment, and attention to detail.
Ability to work independently and maintain agreed working-hour overlap with the U.S. team.
Nice to Have
Experience supporting a U.S. accounting firm or offshore tax delivery team.
Familiarity with business returns, including partnerships and corporations.
Experience with AI platforms and coding assistants such as Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, or Cursor.
Familiarity with Python, SQL, APIs, low-code automation, or comparable technologies.
Experience integrating AI outputs with tax workpapers, document systems, or internal applications.
Experience evaluating model performance and managing token usage and operating costs.
Experience delivering staff training or supporting adoption of new technology.
A degree or professional qualification in accounting, tax, information systems, or a related field.
Nice to Have
Tax professionals use existing AI tools confidently and effectively in their daily work.
Business needs are translated into clear, practical automation requirements.
The department adopts workflows that measurably reduce manual effort and rework.
Outputs meet agreed accuracy and consistency standards, with exceptions routed for review.
Solutions are documented, maintainable, and supported through changes in tools, models, and business needs.
Why This Role
